Below is a list of books for this unit. Most, if not all of them, should be able to be found at a local library - however, you may want to add some to your own personal collection. Additionally - not all of the books are needed for the unit. Read the reviews and pick what would be best for your family. |
I Survived the Nazi Invasion, 1944 By Lauren Tarshis - This is the main book for the unit. It is required to complete the unit.

Great World War II Projects by Sheri Bell-Rehwoldt – This is one of my favorite books. I love the hands on projects, the historical explanations, the trivia, and more. Suggested for students in 3rd-7th grades.

World War II Frontline Soldiers and Their Families by Nick Hunter – This is another great book. Colorful pages, short bits of text, facts and more. Although the information does not go deep, a wide array of topics are covered. Topics in this book include Fighting the War, Families Under Fire, Women at War, The War Economy, Persecution and Genocide, Victory and Recovery.

Attack on Pearl Harbor – The True Story of the Day American Entered World War II by Shelley Tanaka – A very good book that is engaging with both it’s images and text.. Colorful maps and diagrams. Suggested for 5th grade and up.

In Their Own Words World War II Life on the Home Front by Fiona Macdonald – This book is packed with information – timelines, people of the war, popular culture of the time, and more. Suggested for 5th-7th grades.

Eyewitness World War II by Simon Adams – Eyewitness books are always a favorite around our home. The images, facts, diagrams, details and more are never disappointing. Suggested for students in 3rd-7th grades.

Good Question! Why did the Whole World Go to War? By Martin W. Sandler – This book would read well as a read aloud. It is meant for younger students – but it has a lot of words and fewer pictures. The topics are excellent, making this a great book to teach from. Suggested for students in 2nd-5th grade.

The Final Victories by Michelle Bisson – An excellent resource with information that covers the following: The Fall of the Third Reich, Islands of the Pacific, Burma and China, Japan, the Cost of War, World War to Cold War, Technology, Remembering the War. Suggested for students in grades 6-9.

The Allied Invasion of Europe by Peter Darman – This book really focuses on the battles in Europe. Key attributes to this book include fantastic historical photos, maps and diagrams and excellent facts and information. Suggested for 6th-8th grade.

Living Through World War II by Andrew Langley – This book is an easy read for older students. A wide range of topics are covered. Photos, diagrams, maps and timeline are included. Suggested for 7th grade and up.

World War II Begins by Peter Darman - This book really focuses on Hitler’s rise to power. Key attributes to this book include fantastic historical photos, maps and diagrams and excellent facts and information. Suggested for 6th-8th grade.

America at War World War II by John Perritano – This is a think book that highlights some of the major events during the war. The photos are very good. Suggested for 4th-6th grade.

The Good Fight - How World War II was Won by Stephen E. Ambrose – I really like this book! Not only are the pictures amazing – but the detailed maps, timeline and other information make this book one for the personal library. Suggested for students 6th-9th grades.

The Big Book of World War II by Melissa Wagner and Dan Bryant – This is another book that I really like. Timelines, maps, photos, facts and more. Suggested for 2nd-5th grade students.

America at War World War II People, Politics and Power by William L. Hosch – If you are looking for a text to teach from on World War II – this is a good one. I would not recommend it for student reading, unless it were being used as a resource for older students. Suggested as a read a loud or students 7th grade and older.

Aircraft of World War II by Aaron R. Murray – This is a very colorful and simple book. Easy to read and understand. Suggested for 2nd-5th grade students.

Weapons and Technology of World War II by Windsor Chorlton – An excellent book with information from artillery and weapons to bombs, planes, submarines, communication, radar, medicine and more. Colorful and packed full of information. Suggested for 5th-7th grades.

Dive! World War II Stories of Sailors and Submarines in the Pacific by Deborah Hopkinson – A very well written and reviewed non-fiction narrative of life on ships and submarines during the war. Suggested for 3rd-7th grade.

Heroes of the Holocaust by Ted Gottfried – This book tells of those that fought back against the war under impossible circumstances. It also tells of the recruitment of German children. Suggested for 7th grade and older.

Teen Witness to the Holocaust The Hidden Children of the Holocaust by Esther Kustanowitz – An excellent book about five teens who hid from the Nazis. Suggested for 5th-8th grades.

The Holocaust Racism and Genocide in World War II by Carla Mooney – This is a very good book for 6th-9th grade students. Easy to read, good information, great pictures and engaging.

World Almanac Library of the Holocaust – Aftermath and Remembrance by David Downing – I really like this book. It has a lot of heavy information for such a small book. Suggested for 7th grade and older.

Sioux Code Talkers of World War II by Andrea M. Page – A book about a vital piece of history pertaining to World War II. Includes a teacher guide in the back of the book. Suggested for 3rd-7th grades.

Profiles World War II by Aaron Rosenberg – This book contains a mini biography on the following six people – Adolf Hitler, Winston Churchill, Joseph Stalin, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Emperor Hirohito and Dwight D. Eisenhower. Suggested for 4th-8th grade.

10 Days Anne Frank by David Colbert – This book looks at 10 critical days in the life of Anne Frank – how they impacted her and the world. Suggested for 3rd-8th grade.

Anne Frank Her Life in Words and Pictures by Menno Metselaar and Ruud van der Rol – Oh – I really like this book! The pictures are from the archives of the Anne Frank House. It is like you are looking through someone’s personal photo album, while reading intense pieces of her diary. Suggested for 5th grade and older.

National Geographic Kids Anne Frank by Alexandra Zapruder – This is a level 3 reader. It is bright and colorful with very good photos and facts. Suggested for 1st-4th grade.

Women Heroes of World War II The Pacific Theater by Kathryn J. Atwood – “15 Stories of Resistance, Rescue, Sabotage and Survival” This book is full of amazing stories about brave and strong women. Suggested for 8th grade and older.

World War II Battles and Leaders by Aaron R. Murray – This is an excellent book. Almost like a guide to all the battles and key people of the war. Suggested for 5th grade and older.

The Incredible Women of World War II by Karen Zeinert – This book describes the heroic efforts and contributions of some amazing women during the war in the areas of medicine, military, journalism, volunteer efforts. Actual personal accounts included. Suggested for 5th grade and older.

American Women Pilots of World War II by Karen Donnelly – This book explains some of the difficulties women had being accepted as pilots. It also tells of their triumphs and experiences. Suggested for 4th-7th grade.

Guts and Glory World War II by Ben Thompson – An excellent nonfiction book for 4th-8th grade students. The writing is mesmerizing and the information is factual and educational

You Choose Interactive Books – These are always a hit with kids. There are several pertaining to World War II – Here is a list of our favorites – Stealing Nazi Secrets in World War II, World War II Spies, World War II on the Homefront. These are suggested for 3rd-7th grade.

Blast Back World War II by Nancy Ohlin – This is a fun book. The pictures are cartoon style and the print is large. This book tells about key points during the war with little known facts. This engaging book helps students understand what life was like during that time period. Suggested for 1st-4th grade.

Landmark Supreme Court Cases Korematsu vs The United States by Karen Latchana Kenney – I found the book to be very interesting. The book itself is easy to read, even though it is filled with information. Additional features include timeline of events and rulings, briefs and source notes. Suggested for 7th grade and older.

Baseball Saved Us by Ken Mochizuki – Such a good book!! A young boy describes what it was like to move to an internment camp. He then discovers baseball and uses his anger re the situation his family is in to help him become a better ball player. Suggested for 1st-4th grades.
