Below is a list of books for this unit. Most, if not all of them, should be able to be found at a local library - however, you may want to add some to your own personal collection. Additionally - not all of the books are needed for the unit. Read the reviews and pick what would be best for your family. |
I Survived the Attacks of September 11, 2001 By Lauren Tarshis - This is the main book for the unit. It is required to complete the unit.

Patriotic Symbols of American – Liberty Bell by Hal Marcovitz – This is a book filled with valuable information, facts, pictures, timeline and more. Suggested for 2nd-7th grade students.

The Washington Monument by Elaine Landau – I really like this book. It is short, but very informative. It has great photos and facts and is colorful and fun. Suggested for 3rd-7th grade.

The Liberty Bell by Marc Tyler Nobelman – This is a very simple book with large print. Easy to read and understand. Suggested for 1st-3rd grade students.

The Statue of Liberty by Elaine Landau – I really like this book. It is short, but very informative. It has great photos and diagrams and is colorful and fun. Suggested for 2nd-4th grade.

Patriotic Symbols of America – Uncle Sam International Symbol of America by Hal Marcovitz – Filled with facts, pictures, history and more - this is a very colorful and simple book. Easy to read and understand. I especially like the diagrams and extra activity suggestions in this book. Suggested for 4th-7th grade students.

Smithsonian American Flag by Sarah L. Thomson – This is a great book. So much historical information about our country’s flag. Colorful, informative and very fun. Suggested for children ages 5 and up.

Our American Flag by Mary Firestone – This is a really cute book. I really like the artistry and colors. It is a small book with large print – but holds a great deal of information. Topics include – “Why do countries have flags?”, “The first official flag”, “The Star Spangled Banner”, “Back to Stripes” and more. There are also fun facts. I even learned some things from this children’s book. Suggested for 1st-2nd grade.

Symbols of American Freedom – The Washington Monument by Julia Schaffer – This is a great book for students to read and for teachers and parents to teach from. It includes historical information, diagrams, poems, a timeline and more. Suggested for 3rd-6th grade.

White House by Jessica Morrison and Heather Kissock - This is another great book. Included in this book is an online code that will allow you to go on a virtual tour of the White House. This book covers the history of the White House, a construction timeline, maps, facts, the science used in building the White House, a building activity, a quiz and much more. Suggested for 4th grade and older.

The Story of the Statue of Liberty by Annie Qaiser – This is an interesting book, as it tells the story of The Statue of Liberty from three different perspectives. An interesting and engaging read. Suggested for 4th-8th grade.

The Birth and Growth of a Nation – Hands on Projects about Symbols of American Liberty by Jennifer Quasha – This is one of my favorite books from this unit. A must for pre-school through 4th grade. Excellent hands on crafts and projects to further your study on Symbols of America.

Lady Liberty A Biography by Doreen Rappaport – This is a beautiful book. It is a collection of poetry from the various people who helped build, construct and plan her. Engineers, sculptors, law professor and more. An excellent book! Suggested for 3rd-8th grade.

Uncle Sam and Old Glory Symbols of America by Delno C. West and Jean M. West – This is an excellent book with amazing woodcut illustrations. This book includes 15 American symbols. Suggested for 4th-6th grades.

Heroes of the Day by Nancy Louis – An excellent book that tells the stories of the aftermath and shows the courage and loyalty of community workers. Suggested for 3rd-6th grade.

Stars and Stripes the Story of the American Flag by Sarah L. Thomson – This book tells tales of the past and present. It is clear, concise and easy to read. Suggested for 2nd-4th grade.

The White House – An Illustrated History by Catherine O’Neill Grace – This is an exceptional book with photos of the presidents and their families, diagrams of the White House, a listing of all the presidents and much more. Suggested for 3rd grade and older.

Cause and Effect The September 11 Attacks by Robert Green – This is a good reference book to teach from. It is suggested to be for 9th grade and older, but could be used for younger students if a teacher is pulling from it as a teacher reference book. There is a great deal of good historical and political information in this book.

The Day the Towers Fell America is Under Attack by Don Brown – This book is told in story form and is narrated in a clear and understandable way for young readers. Suggested for 1st-5th grades.

What Were the Twin Towers? By Jim O’Connor – A good book that engages reluctant readers. A historical, easy read with plenty of pictures to break up the text. Suggested for 3rd-7th grades.

A Day in the Life of a Mayor by Liz N. Burby – A look at the job of mayor, featuring New York City Mayor, Rudy Giuliani. Although this book was published prior to the attacks in New York City, Rudy Giuliani played an important part in the community. Learning about him and what a mayor does may be interesting to some students. Suggested for 1st-5th grades.

The 9/11 Attacks by Laura K. Murray – Topics covered in this book include – Understanding Islam, The 9/11 Attacks, Terrorists, death of Bin Laden, ongoing threats. Suggested for 3rd-6th grades.

George W. Bush Encyclopedia of Presidents by Matt Donnelly – Topics covered in this book include the 9/11 Attacks, George Bush’s upbringing, life as Governor, life as President and more. Suggested for 5th grade and older.

September 11, 2001 by Andrew Santella – This book reads well and has larger print. It is full of excellent information, facts, diagrams, timelines and more. Suggested for 4th-6th grades.

The 2001 World Trade Center Attack by Jacqueline Dembar Greene – This is a very simple book. It has very good photos and diagrams, maps and quotes. Suggested for 2nd-5th grades.

September 11, 2001 The Day That Changed America by Jill C. Wheeler – This book covers several aspects of the attack; the attack itself, emergency workers, Mayor Giuliani, President Bush, terrorism, recovery and more. Suggested for 3rd -5th grades.

Faces of Ground Zero by Joe McNally – A book of true heroes. Suggested for all ages.

10 True Tales Heroes of 9/11 by Allan Zullo – An excellent nonfiction book for 3rd-7th grade students. The stories in this book are astonishing and courageous; the information is factual and educational.

America’s Heroes Inspiring Stories of Courage, Sacrifice and Patriotism by Peter Bannon – Several touching photos and stories in this book. Suggested for all ages.

Hero Dogs Courageous Canines in Action by Donna M. Jackson – This is a good book that shows how loyal and trained dogs can help people in times of disaster. Suggested for 5th-8th grades.

Dog Heroes of September 11th A Tribute to America’s Search and Rescue Dogs by Nona Kilgore Bauer - This book profiles each of the dogs who assisted in the rescue and recovery of 9/11. Suggested for all ages.
