Below is a list of books for this unit. Most, if not all of them, should be able to be found at a local library - however, you may want to add some to your own personal collection. Additionally - not all of the books are needed for the unit. Read the reviews and pick what would be best for your family. |
I Survived The American Revolution, 1776 By Lauren Tarshis - This is the main book for the unit. It is required to complete the unit.

George Washington Crosses the Delaware Would YOU Risk the Revolution? By Elaine Landau – This is a very fun and engaging book with historical value and questions for the reader in every section. Suggested for 3rd-5th grade.

You Wouldn’t Want to be a Pirate’s Prisoner by Hohn Malam – A humorous and engaging book. Suggested for 2nd-4th grade.

Eyewitness American Revolution by Stuart Murray – Eyewitness books are always so engaging with dozens of pictures and explanations. This is certainly a book for the home library. Suggested for 3rd-7th grade.

National Geographic Crossroads America Independence Now – The American Revolution 1763-1783 by Daniel Rosen – This is a good book that covers a good survey of the American Revolution – before, causes of, battles and more. Suggested for 3rd-6th grade.

Let it Begin Here! Lexington and Concord First Battles of the American Revolution by Dennis Brindell Fradin – This book is told in story and timeline form - engaging and educational. Wonderful illustrations. Suggested for 2nd-4th grade.

The Biggest Battles of the Revolutionary War by Christopher Forest – This is a thin and easy to read book.. However, it is filled with great info on several important battles. Suggested for 3rd-5th grade.

Can’t You Make Them Behave, King George? By Jean Fritz – Told in humorous, but educational story form. A great combination with Jean Fritz as author and Tomie dePaola as the illustrator. Suggested for 2nd-7th grade.

Paul Revere’s Ride – Graphic Library by Xavier Niz – The Graphic Library series was always a favorite with my oldest boy. Educational and engaging. Suggested for 3rd-5th grade.

The Good Fight The Feuds of the Founding Fathers and How They Shaped the Nation – by Anne Quirk – An interesting look at our founding fathers. A fun and engaging read. Suggested for 2nd-5th grade.

A Young Patriot The American Revolution as Experienced by One Boy by Jim Murphy – The war as seen through the eyes of a 15 year old boy. His memories are captured in this fantastic book. Suggested for 5th-7th grade.

Paul Revere American Patriot by Barbara Ford – This book is a very good and thorough resource. Recommended to be a read aloud, for older students or text for the teacher. There are very few pictures in this book and some students might not find it as engaging to read on their own. However, it is an excellent book. Suggested for 6th grade and older or as a read aloud.

George VS George The American Revolution as Seen from Both Sides by Rosalyn Schanzer – An excellent book showing both sides interests and arguments. Colorful and educational and engaging. Suggested for 4th-7th grade.

George Washington a Photographic Story of a Life by Lenny Hort – A DK Publishing book. This book is fascinating. The entire series is one for the home library. Engaging with detailed information and wonderful illustrations. Suggested for 5th grade to adult – but can also be read as a read aloud.

Washington’s Crossing the Delaware and the Winter at Valley Forge by John Micklos Jr. – This is a short, but good book. It includes facts, myths, timeline and more. Suggested for 3rd-5th grade.

Paul Revere’s Midnight Ride by Stephen Krensky – A historic event told in story form with beautiful illustrations. Suggested for 2nd-4th grade.

Betsy Ross the American Flag – Graphic Library by Kay Melchisedech Olson - The Graphic Library series was always a favorite with my oldest boy. Educational and engaging. Suggested for 3rd-5th grade.

Women Soldiers, Spies and Patriots of the American Revolution by Martha Kneib – A book full of incredible, little known information. Excellent as a read aloud or for an older student. Suggested for 4th grade and older.

The Brave Women and Children of the American Revolution by John Mickols Jr. – An easy to read and engaging book. Topics include – roles of women and children, home front, army, battle front, spies and messengers and more. Suggested for 2nd-5th grade.

Young Scientist Concepts and Projects – Astronomy by Robin Kerrod – By far one of my favorite books. This is an excellent book for kids to read on their own and explore projects – or to do as a family with younger kids. Build a telescope, a sundial, learn about constellations and moon movements and SO MUCH MORE. Appropriate for independent use 4th-7th grades.

Great Women of the American Revolution by Michael Burgan – Learn about the life of women during the American Revolution – roles, rights, duties and more. Suggested for 3rd-6th grade.

Survive Alive Finding Your Way by Neil Champion – This is an excellent book with practical information. In this book you will find information about using a compass, how ships used to navigate, using the stars as a guide and much more. This book includes a survival skills test, hands on projects and real life survival practice exercises. Appropriate for grades 3rd-8th

Great Women of the American Revolution by Brianna Hall – A good and simple read about amazing women during the Revolutionary War. Suggested for 3rd-4th grade.

Betsy Ross and the Creation of the American Flag By Kirsten Urwin – A simple and thin book with excellent information and photos. Suggested for 3rd-6th grade.

Betsy Ross Patriot by Vicky Franchino – A good read for elementary children. Topics include Betsy Ross, the making of the flag, the end of the war and more. Suggested for 3rd - 4th grade.

Food and Recipes of the Revolutionary War Cooking Throughout American History by George Erdosh – This is an excellent book. Recipes included. Eat what the soldiers ate! Suggested for 2nd-4th grade

The Revolutionary War Home Front by Diane Smolinski – A good book with topics as follows – colonial farms, southern plantations, slavery, Native Americans, life in the city, colonial cities and more. Suggested for 3rd-6th grade.

The Visual Dictionary of Military Uniforms by DK Publishing – One for the home library! The photos descriptions and details are amazing. Suggested for 5th grade and older.

How to be a Revolutionary War Soldier by Thomas Ratliff – National Geographic – Certainly one of my favorite books. Topics include soldier, pay, food, training, uniform, weapons, army life, battle tactics, injuries, promotions and more. A quiz is in the back of the book. Suggested for 3rd-6th grade.

The American Revolution for Kids – A History with 21 Activities by Janice Herbert – Such a Fun book and highly recommended. Crafts and activities include a fringed shirt, tricorn hat or create reenactments. Suggested for 4th-6th grade.

Astronomy Lab for Kids by Michelle Nichols – A well organized and visually appealing book. Time requirements and supplies are at the beginning of each of the 52 activities and experiments. Scientific explanations of the fun projects and further enrichment follow each activity. Appropriate for grades 3-6.

Astronomy Projects by Isaac Asimov – I really like this book. It has several project ideas including model making and creative writing. Suggested for children in grades 2-5.

Liberty Kids Complete Series - 40 Episodes - This is perhaps the best DVD series I have ever watched for elementary kids on American History. My kids loved it, I enjoyed it. Engaging and follows along with all the history curriculum we ever used. Run time 14 hours and 26 minutes. Suggested for all ages.

Disney's The American Presidents 1754-1861 - Excellent DVD for students 3rd-8th grade. 45 min run time

I encourage you to review the list of activities, consider the ages and interests of your children, and search out other crafts or resources for yourself as well. Coloring Book – I really like the Dover Historical Coloring books – There are several about the American Revolutionary War.

Draw and Write Through History - Pilgrims, Pirates and Patriots (A.D. 1492-1781) - This book has a great tutorial on drawing Paul Revere, a solider, a cannon and Washington praying at Valley Forge. This is a book that can be used with several history topics.
