Below is a list of books for this unit. Most, if not all of them, should be able to be found at a local library - however, you may want to add some to your own personal collection. Additionally - not all of the books are needed for the unit. Read the reviews and pick what would be best for your family. |
I Survived The Eruption of Mount St. Helens, 1980 By Lauren Tarshis - This is the main book for the unit. It is required to complete the unit.

Devastated by a Volcano by Stephen Person – This is a simple and easy to read book with excellent information about different famous eruptions and how volcanoes are made. Suggested for 2nd-7th grade.

Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument by Sharlene and Ted Nelson – A well written book, with excellent photos and interesting facts. This is a short book with large print, but a lot of information. An exceptional book. Suggested for 2nd-5th grade.

Volcano The Eruption and Healing of Mount St. Helens by Patricia Lauber – This is a good reference book to teach from. It is suggested to be for 6th grade, but could be used for younger students if a teacher is pulling from it as a teacher reference book. There is a great deal of good historical and scientific information in this book.

Warning Volcano! The Story of Mount St. Helens by Autumn Leigh – This book is written for a younger audience with larger print and few pages. Suggested for 2nd-4th grade.

Will It Blow By Elizabeth Rusch – I really like this book. It is written and illustrated in a very engaging way. It is written in a way that the reader is a “detective” learning about the clues to volcanic eruption. This book contains science experiments, facts, diagrams, photos and more. It does mention 500,000 years on pg nine. Suggested for 2nd-5th grades.

Disasters Mount St. Helens by Jen Green – This is a very good book. Topics include Mount St. Helens eruption story, a look at volcanoes, the aftermath of Mount St. Helens. Suggested for 2nd-6th grade.

Harper – Topics covered in this book include – volcanoes, Mount St. Helens eruption, emergency response, clean up after the eruption, life after the eruption, nature’s recovery, scientific discovery and more. An excellent resource for teachers. Suggested for 5th-7th grades.

Fiery Volcano The Eruption of Mount St. Helens by Carmen Bredeson – I particularly like the information in this book. First hand accounts are told in an easy to understand format, along with excellent photos and diagrams. Suggested for 4th-6th grade.

Graphic Natural Disasters Volcanoes by Rob Shone – This is an enjoyable and engaging book for reluctant readers. It does have factual and educational information. Suggested for 4th-7th grade.

Volcanoes! Mountains of Fire Step into Reading Level 4 by Eric Arnold – This book reads well and has larger print. It is full of excellent information and facts, written in an engaging way. Suggested for 2nd-4th grades.

Deadly Disasters Volcanoes Disaster and Survival by Stephanie Buckwalter – I really like this book. Topics include Mount St. Helens, different kinds of volcanoes, dangerous volcanoes in history and more. Suggested for 4th-7th grade.

Planet Earth The World in Infographics by Jon Richards and Ed Simkins – This book is bright, colorful and very easy to read. It is filled is dozens of Earth facts. It does mention millions of years ago on page 7. Suggested for 3rd-6th grade.

Fault Lines and Tectonic Plates by Kathleen M. Reilly – This is one of those great hands on books that you keep in your library. Excellent information, experiments, projects, vocabulary and more. Suggested for 4th-7th grade.

Revised Plants of the Pacific Northwest Coast by Jim Pojar and Andy MacKinnon – An excellent guide to have on the shelf for a resource and to take with you during nature studies.
